You may require a fit note if you have been absent from work for more than 7 days. When you work out the number of days that you’ve been absent, you need to count all the days in a row you’ve been sick. This includes days that you do not usually work, like weekends and bank holidays.
Please contact reception if you need to request a fit note from a GP. If you have not already discussed your condition with a clinician, you will likely need to be assessed before a fit note can be issued. This may be over the telephone, if appropriate.
If you’ve been off sick for 7 days or less
If you’re off work sick for 7 days or less, your employer should not ask for medical evidence that you’ve been ill. Instead, they can ask you to confirm that you’ve been ill. You can do this by filling in a form yourself when you return to work. We call this self-certification.
